Il Nostro Sistema Solare

The 3rd grade class has been studying, “Earth and its place in the Solar System,” and learning about il sole (the sun), i pianete (the planets) e il sistema solare (the solar system) in English, but MOSTLY in Italiano.  A big thanks to Ms. Laurenzi for translating and creating the following book, “Il Nostro Sistema Solare,” which we have been studying in class.

Watch and listen to the video version of the book below.

Language Camp “Lago del Bosco” at Victory!

On Saturday, November 5th, from 9am -1pm, Lago del Bosco, an Italian language immersion camp, will be coming to Victory School! Victory students from K4-4th grade are invited to attend and experience what a typical day is like at the language immersion camp – NO LANGUAGE BACKGROUND IS NEEDED.  Students will participate in language learning activities: singing, cooking, arts, crafts and projects!
Many students from Victory have attended Lago del Bosco during the past few summers and they will be in attendance to share their experiences and help lead activities.

Thanks to NIAF and Concordia Language Villages, this entire day of activities is FREE!

Check out more about Lago del Bosco at their website and view the mission of Concordia Language Villages below – very admirable qualities to instill in our children!  Bravo!

“The mission of Concordia Language Villages is to prepare young people for responsible citizenship in our global community.”

Colori in Italiano

Watch this video and you will quickly learn to identify and spell colors in Italiano!!

Practice and Listen to the Alphabet

Ascolta l’alfabeto (listen to – and practice – the alphabet).  This video is great for the new FLES students, young students and students new to Italian.  Listen to the different sounds of the letters in Italian and try to learn the words that begin with those letters!

Buona fortuna (Good luck)!

Un Musicista Famosa ha visitato la Scuola di Victory!

On Tuesday, October 25th, the students of victory school had the privilege of hosting the world’s accordion champion, Cory Pesaturo!  He recently became the world’s MOST ACCOMPLISHED accordionist.  Listen to this recent national radio broadcast about Cory at the link below:

You can also check out Cory’s website!

Cory really excited the entire school with his traditional and unique uses of a classic instrument.  Check out the videos of Cory playing the accordion and Victory students excitedly participating during his performance.  THANKS CORY!!!

L’aquilone e La Gallina (The Chicken and the Kite)

As a prereading activity for an Italian story some 3rd graders will be reading next week, we covered some new vocabulary and then we got outside on a windy day a volare un’aquilone (to fly a kite).  For the last 15 minutes of the school daygli studenti di 109 hanno fatto volare un aquilone (the students of 109 flew a kite).

This was an exciting activity and MANY of the studenti had never flown a kite before!

Annual Pizzeria Piccola Fundraiser – Tuesday December 20th

On Tuesday December 20th, 2 days before Victory School’s Winter Break, the Italian Immersion Program will be holding its 3rd Annual Pizzeria Piccola Fundraiser!

Join us anytime between 3:30 and 10 pm at the pizzeria for a tasty pizza, great conversation with students, parents and teachers and some enjoyable Italian music on the hi-fi.  The last two years have been great and many people have told us this is their favorite event of the year.  Also, a portion of the profits will be donated to the Partial Italian Immersion program at Victory.

Check this link for the location and directions http://pizzeriapiccola.com/docs/location.htm

We all look forward to seeing you there to eat, chat and (if you are up for it) volunteer to serve pizzas (talk to your child’s teacher).

GRAZIE!

3rd Grade FLES Group (Ms. Knoespel’s Class)

This 3rd Grade FLES group is just learning Italian, but they have a hunger to learn the language, which makes teaching them very exciting.

In the videos below, the students are practicing asking someone their name (“Come ti chiami?” / “Mi chiamo ____”), asking someone how they are doing (“Come stai?” / “Molto Bene”) and thanking their classmates (“Grazie” / “Prego”).

Watch these videos with your students and have them explain the dialogue to you!

A New Year! Look for New Post on Our Website!

All of the teachers at Victory School have been EXTREMELY busy implementing the new partial immersion program at Victory Elementary School.  This year in addition to 6 Italian Immersion classes, we have also introduced the FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) program and monolingual classes from K4-4th grade are being exposed to an hour of Italian everyday!  IT IS AMAZING HOW QUICKLY THE FLES CHILDREN ARE PICKING UP ITALIAN!

Here are the details on the current Partial Italian Immersion Program at Victory School

Victory School is now able to offer Italian to about 210 students as we implement our school-wide Partial Immersion Program. In the past only about 80 -90 students were able to learn the language in the full immersion classrooms. 210 students in grades K4 – 4th grade receive Italian on a daily basis as compared to 80 to 90 last year.

About 105 of the 210 students are still housed with Italian speaking teachers who continue to nurture their language and academic skills in the target language. Italian is still used for instruction in content areas. The remaining 105 students are enrolled in a FLES Italian program; learning Italian as a foreign language. These students had no previous experience with the language. They receive Italian instruction for one hour a day, 5 days a week.
