The Milwaukee Public School system pioneered language immersion schools in the late 1970′s with the creation of the German Immersion School.  The school was the third k-5 language immersion school in the country.  By the early 1980′s, MPS had added two more immersion schools – French and Spanish.

The Italian Immersion program at Victory Elementary School was established in 2006 and continues the strong tradition of immersion language schools in the Milwaukee Public School district.  This unique program introduces young students to the Italian language by immersing them in the language throughout the school day.

During the 2011-2012 school year, Victory School began offering Italian to about 210 students as we began to implement our school-wide Partial Immersion Program. Currently 210 students in grades K4 – 4th grade receive Italian on a daily basis as compared to 80 to 90 last year.

About 105 of the 210 students are still housed with Italian speaking teachers who continue to nurture their language and academic skills in the target language. Italian is still used for instruction in content areas. The remaining 105 students are enrolled in a FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) Italian program; learning Italian as a foreign language. These students have had no previous experience with the language. They receive Italian instruction for one hour a day, 5 days a week.
